RIAA trial redux

So remember that thing I posted last week about the first RIAA case coming to trial? Well, um, the good guys lost. Jammie Thomas' computer was linked to an IP address, which somehow was linked back to her. Sharing 24 songs on Kazaa, she was! Total fine? Oh, about $220K. That's a hair under $10K per song. So sharing 2 CDs = losing your house. More precedents were set - the RIAA doesn't have to prove that anyone downloaded the song, just that it was "made available". That's a huge burden that has been lifted off their shoulders, and is almost certainly a free pass to allow the record companies to keep suing their customers for not buying through officially sanctioned channels.

You can read some of the legal docs here
